There is such a thing as "ordinary infallibility of the magisterium". Again, this refers to matters that have always been taught by the Church, with no teaching ever to the contrary, such that they are not up for debate. Ex cathedra infallibility is one step beyond that. It is as rock-solid as infallibility gets.
Short answer, EC is not the only kind of infallibility, it is just the absolute highest, most solemn form of it. It is used very sparingly.
I have never heard of this. It looks like I have some reading to do to get up to speed.

Thank you, I think. I was gong to consult Jone and another book. Now, you've added to my reading list.

Jone is pretty succinct on most things. I was surprised that he devotes a huge section to contract law. OTOH, he deals with the question of homosexuality in a manner very "short, sweet, and to the point". In these days, a much broader treatment would be expected.

I'm not sure what the problem is but when I click on the link to the Catholic Culture article I do not get to any article and the following message is on the screen:

I found the EWTN article interesting. I knew of the Vatican II teaching about the pope and worldwide episcopate being able to issue a document that was the "ordinary and universal magisterium". I was not aware it was infallible. Interestingly, the article says that not many know it is infallible and the Vatican does not seem to make anything of it. Kudos to you for knowing about this.
