Q: If these Qumran texts are so crucial, why didn't the Church; why didn't Saint Jerome have them in the AD380s? Even though their antiquity counts for something, so also are the gnostic and true apocryphal texts "of antiquity." I am skeptical of their true value inasmuch as scripture translations have taken a nose dive since their discovery.
I suspect that, as occurred later in the post-Vatican II period, Pope Pius XII's admonition (Divino Afflante Espiritu) to consider them in revising translations was taken too far - the spirit of the age impelling that action.

Bizarre logic, the Qumran texts were not discovered till the mid 1960's

Whilst I admit I am often bizarre when viewed from convention, not even my timing was off. Dead Sea/Qumran 1946-1947. I mentioned the spiritual/cultural aspect involved.
To undertstand your perspective, was a sudden change in scriptural translation a normal and natural (if not desirable) thing, or something which might have been viewed circumspectly?
