Old Pope is old. Has reached "Old Pope yells at cloud" stage. Ignore. I plan to. It doesn't apply to me anyway, for as I brought out in another thread, I am far from being a "right-wing ideologue". I'm basically a Kennedy Democrat with a pro-life twist (though I usually vote Republican for that very reason). I really want to believe that, if they had lived, JFK and RFK Sr would have been pro-life. Thankfully they weren't around to get corrupted by John Courtney Murray et al. This Doug Burgum guy is interesting. I've picked up on somewhat of a resemblance to George Washington. Anybody else notice that?

Football - who is writing an article in a British publication and calling football soccer. This is heresy of a high order. The priest is actually recommending priests who play footie and don't do dogmatic lectures. He is Argentinian after all Football isn't a matter of life and death there. It's much more important than that.
This article has been given the byline 'Crux Staff.' I am not surprised. The deep shame of calling football 'soccer' means that I would be ashamed also to place my name next to such an article.

Dads should play football with kids. Priests should administer communion and teach the Gospel. And what Francis calls "dogmatizing", I'd call reminding people that Jesus exists. Especially today people know more about commercial entertainers than about our Lord.
And then:
Imperialism is very strong, and [South] America is the victim of empires of all kinds I speak badly of any empire, of whatever sort
So basically he puts an equality sign between American foreign policy and Russian invasion on Ukraine.

If you want an example of a Catholic figure connected with football who is also remembered as a man who worked and evangelized among the poor in both Scotland and England try this gent: www.celticfc.com/news/2632/

It is a shame Brother Walfrid is not better known outside Scotland. He also did a huge amount of work with the poor here in East London but hardly anyone would know who he was if I named him. Still, God knows his own.

Celtic needs to sell merch with his picture on. Percentage of proceeds to charity. That would get his name around.

You know what, I went and checked out their merchandise and not one thing features an image of him. There's a great big statue of him outside the grounds. They could put that image on t-shirts, pint glasses etc. That's great shame as Brother Walfrid is a man who deserves to be better known.

First thing that jumped out at me was that the title of the article is:
Priests must play soccer, not preach dogma, says Pope
Yet the quote in the article is:
“We need normal seminarians, with their problems, who play soccer, and who don’t go to the neighbourhoods to dogmatise,” Pope Francis said.
How does one substitute Preist for seminarian? If you can't relay the quote correctly, maybe someone has a hidden agenda.
Since the Pope was speaking of seminarians and not priests, as students, they should have normal lives, with normal young adult activities included, soccer or football depending on where one is from might be included. There will be plenty of time after they are finished in the seminary and ordained as a priest to do the work of a priest.

Many of them could use the exercise.

I knew one priest who would regularly run and work out in a gym.

I am not suggesting that priests shouldn't exercise or play soccer, just that as a student/seminarian (thinking of younger people), they are still kids basically and should have time spent doing "kid" stuff.
There is plenty of time, ie the rest of their lives to be full on adults.
My son is looking forward to graduating college. It will probably be another 4 years to finish both his engineering degrees, but I often tell him, just remember once you graduate, you have decades of work and adulting to look forward to. Mom and dad aren't going to be taking care of anything for you, you will be on your own.
This may be the sentiment that Pope Francis was trying to convey.

It could be, but it came across as looking like teaching dogma wasn't important. The impression that comes across lately, is that the "Church of Francis" wants to be big on inclusion, big on "encounter", big on "human fraternity", and not so big on traditional doctrine or morality. That, too, could be a "both/and" rather than an "either/or", but that's not the impression one gets. Doctrine and morality are important. That's what we have catechisms for.
