Turns out, he didn't criticize it. He just didn't mention it, and the news ran clickbait headlines that he "snubbed it". In that case I go back to what I was to say earlier... God save us from Francis

The eight pointed star began to appear in Islamic art in the Middle Ages. It is referred to as khatim or khatim-sulayman, meaning “seal of the prophets”. This use of the star is likely related to earlier appearances of six-pointed star in Judaic designs, which are referred to as the “seal of Solomon”.
The Pope doesn't have a great staff. I'm sure no one asked him what he would prefer.

At first I was thinking the Star of Bethlehem is depicted with 8 points, but 4 of them are more pronounced then the other 4 and it's straight up and down etc
Anyway, I searched from some others in previous years and it looks to be the same tree and star, so it's probably nothing, but would be cool to have an explanation nonetheless.
God Bless

I think it's been the same tree and star previous years, so it's probably nothing, will have to look into the Solomon aspect, but surely there is a uniquely Christian aspect to it, especially if it's been used for several years IMO.
Thanks and God Bless

And it's possible the Staff had no clue of the meaning of the 8 pointed star. Someone might have just said "Yep, it's a Star" and been done with it. Things like this though are why I have an irrational paranoia about Symbols on anything these days. One wrong symbol and someone somewhere thinks your part of the Secret Alien Monkey cult that's going to steal all of Earth's Banana trees, followed by that someone informing everyone "HE'S ONE OF THEM!". lol, I wouldn't say I have an irrational paranoia about symbols on anything, but I'm definitely more attune to it I think and like to err on the side of caution when possible. Since there is a lot of stuff that is divination (crystals etc) and worse (satanic/occult) that many people would not even notice, but then with my St Benedict's medal on me usually, I don't have to worry about it too much IMO.
God Bless You

Most of the Stars in Catholic artwork have that tall star, and not the more "American" looking star. Here s pic from today of Pope Francis with his own creche. Attachments:
