I wonder if we'll see a line of his dissenters go down a similar path . . . ?

Very petty of the Church to do this. I would say that Burke's supporters can make up any shortfall in his temporal needs, so he shouldn't need the Church for a salary and a place to live.

It is, of course, sensationalist nonsense emanating from an over-the-top conspiracy theory laden rabidly anti-Francis propaganda site that relies on "anonymous sources". In other words, they just made it up. Here's the original on their English site: newdailycompass.com/en/the-pope-away-with-cardinal-burkes-house-and-salaryThe so-called "Catholic News Agency", which you quoted, is part of EWTN, which has also become a kooky anti-Francis organization with no credibility any more. The "reportedly" in the title is a poor attempt at deflecting responsibility. Mother Angelica would puke.

Again, with no credible sources or actual information beyond vague rumors and lots of "ifs and buts". It's basically a regurgitation of the original article with "reactions" from various sympathetic sources, but nothing even faintly resembling a confirmation.
The NYT is really weird when it comes to reporting on the Church. Ross Douthat is their main opinion columnist on Catholic matters, and he's very, very friendly to right-wing and Traditionalist Catholics, and very, very anti-Francis.

Part of variations of secular democracies with freewheeling media owned mostly by the rich (in the states, around 90 pct of media controlled by six corporations), and probably worsened by social media, all of which paint the Papacy in different ways, and coupled with combinations of rumors and commentary.

But when it comes to fruition that Burke has had his Cardinal's salary and apartment taken away from him, there will either be reasons given, or there will not be reasons given.
We'll know soon enough.
The Church needs to have its own press apparatus, which issues nothing but the "party line", and put its version of things out there for the world to see, and to pass judgment upon. I have in mind something similar to RT, Press TV (Iran), or Xinhua/CCTV.
I am quite aware that there are such semi-official press outlets such as Our Sunday Visitor, L'Osservatore Romano, the Vatican Press Office, and the various diocesan newspapers (I used to work for one), but I have mind something with a unified TV, radio, online, and print operation, presenting only the Church's point of view with no dissent or divergent voices, to which the Church could point and say "THIS is the media presence of the Church, what you hear from us is the mind of the Church, nothing more, nothing less, and if you hear anything different, you need to prefer us to them", possibly securing placement on satellite and cable TV.

But when it comes to fruition that Burke has had his Cardinal's salary and apartment taken away from him, there will either be reasons given, or there will not be reasons given. The reason appears to be that Cardinal Burke has left, or soon will be leaving, Rome and is moving to Lacrosse, Wisconsin, of his own volition, to care for his elderly mother. As such, he is no longer entitled to the salary and housing provided for cardinals residing in Rome. www.fromrome.info/2023/11/27/cardinal-burke-moving-to-la-cross-wisconsin-to-care-for-elderly-mother/On top of that, Pope Francis has already cut salaries twice before for cardinals residing in Rome, regardless of whether he "likes" them or not, and has talked before about having them cover their own housing expenses. The current salary for a cardinal residing in Rome is 4500 Euro, that is, about 5000 USD. And that's just for being a plain old cardinal. Heads of dicasteries and other officials earn more on top of that. Full benefits and hefty pension package. Tax free. With free housing. And all travel, lodging, and other associated expenses paid, including a hefty per diem, when on official Vatican business (which applies to all cardinals, regardless of where they reside). So that's well in excess of the equivalent of 100,000 USD that a tax paying citizen would earn before taxes. Add to that tax-free donations, honoraria and other side earnings, such as personal investments, book royalties, interviews and speaking engagements, and Cardinal Burke is ridiculously far from starving and homeless. He has enough in the bank to live like a king for the rest of his days.

The folks who know me from the old CAF days know that I'm a Pope Francis fan and pretty hard on slanderous Catholic "tabloid" sites like Church Militant and Lifesite.
Tell you what - Just enter "Pope Francis" and "Burke" into your favorite search engine. Pick whatever link you like on this latest news and share it here. I'll warn you that playing Goldilocks with sources ("Too liberal!" "Too conservative!") isn't a sustainable approach, so hopefully you find one that's as close as possible to "just right."
My take on the issue is that I don't yet know enough.

My take on the issue is that I don't yet know enough. Then you shouldn't have posted it until you checked it out. Did you even check the original source? If you did, it would have been bleeding obvious that it was totally made up. The source you posted toned it down to give it a bit of credibility by stripping it of the most sensationalist elements, but even then, you should have been a bit skeptical.

I can't force you to believe the source, but I don't think your bloggy-blurb from Ordo Militaris (speaking of anti-Pope sources) is much of a correction.
That said, a lot of the rad-trad vlogg-o-sphere is acknowledging that this happened. Like I said, I need more information.
