As you note, the Mail' reporters are not connected to local situations so can't be pressured in that way. I find the paper odious on numerous counts though. I'm old enough to remember the massively insulting slaps it took at Catholics during the Troubles. It had numerous editorial pieces which suggested violence is inherent to the Catholic mindset and that the Irish were essentially semi-civilized due to being ruled by the British but might lapse back into barbarism at any time. I can recall family members reading this sort of rubbish out for a laugh. It does tend to bias my outlook regarding the paper somewhat. Then again there is little in the way of quality journalism in any British or Irish paper at this point I'd say. The Guardian and The Times have declined and then declined again over the last few decades.

IDK...one time there was a murder at a bar 2 blocks from my house in Maryland, USA where my husband and I used to go from time to time, and I ended up having to read the Daily Fail to find out exactly what happened because the local newspaper of record in our area refused to report on the murder beyond literally one paragraph that basically said bar was closed for liquor license review because someone killed someone else there. It is likely that the owner had connections to keep the story minimized in the local paper and/ or that the paper did not want to report because of a racial component to the story. Meanwhile, across the ocean, Daily Mail ran a full page detailed story on this business that happened in our little town in USA, complete with details and photos of everybody involved before violence broke out. Then at some point we had the Ariel Castro kidnapping situation in my old hometown and Daily Fail just happened to have a connection to his son, so they ran all kinds of exclusive stuff no US paper could get. I never thought I'd have to read a paper from across the pond to find out about stuff happening in my own neighborhood but that's "journalism" for ya. That's what I use the DM for a lot of times. They get into the nitty-gritty that their American counterparts often don't. You have to take the DM for what it is. Their microscopic treatment of celebrities and their misadventures, you can either take it or leave it. But they do provide a useful function in being willing to "go there" when American news sources aren't willing (and/or able) to do so.
