As some of you may remember, I gave up coffee for Lent. The wonderful benefit is that I have not had a single bout of gas and/or diarrhea that normally occurred a short while after drinking coffee. I used to think it was some kind of allergy to coffee itself. NOT! I read this article and did a thorough inspection of my coffee maker - upside down where it drips into the pot. YIKES!!! Just cleaning the pot in soapy water is not enough, since the mold grows under that lid and in the reservoir. I was sick! But also relieved to have found this problem
I can't believe how well I have felt after drinking my green tea replacement for coffee for about two weeks now. No more cramps! I have had the same problem with public urns where they brew coffee for a large crowd.
When it's time to go back to coffee, I believe I will be using a glass old-fashioned percolator, so I can visually inspect the entire unit and use a brush to clean the perk tube.
Thought it might be helpful to some of you who might be as shocked as I was when I looked into my Mr. Coffee Maker.

I use a Bialetti stove-top espresso maker to make my coffee. It has the advantage of being very simple, and easy to see if anything nasty is growing there. Plus it makes good, strong coffee! Just what it takes to start my morning. Now for Lent, I gave up wine/alcohol except on Sundays, and desserts except fruit. I am already seeing a positive effect on the scale. But give up coffee? NEVAH!

I do the vinegar thing and I still have my doubts, as it doesn't seem to reach everywhere in the machine. I usually use a toothpick to scrape away any gunk in the corners.
(We used to clean it never, because I didn't drink coffee and my husband only made it on the weekends. Then I finally started, thought it was gross at home, cleaned it, then magically it tasted good. Whaddya know.)

I once gave Q Junior a drop of coffee from my finger. It left him turbo-charged for the whole day. I have never repeated the experiment thereafter.

Cleaning with vinegar just gets to the drip vents, but not the area surrounding them, especially when the mold has been accumulating over time. I had to scrub it with a brush! I wonder, too, how well the black tube in the reservoir that brings the water up to the drip spout is really cleaned? The proof is no more cramps or diarrhea since I quit drinking from it.

I've never gotten sick from coffee...iced tea in restaurants? Yeah. But it is a natural laxative. HA!

Wow. Boy am I glad I don't drink coffee Yeah, even now I don't love it, and it has to be cold. I still don't like it hot, though my husband tells me I'll get there. He drinks 4+ cups a day.
