www.americamagazine.org/faith/2022/06/23/pope-john-paul-birth-control-243227This actually was not the disagreeable article that I expected. Luciani's objections took place prior to the issuance of Humanae vitae, and whether hormonal anovulant pills were artificial, or merely enhanced a natural function, was a legitimate subject for debate before HV. In fact, this was Dr Rock's original argument, that BCPs could perhaps be considered "natural" in that they assisted a natural function, much as an antibiotic assists the body in fighting infection --- the body already produces naturally occurring antibiotics, and pharmaceuticals just bolster the natural healing function that is already there. Again, it was a legitimate point, a discussion that needed to take place. Paul VI's explanation of the natural-law objection to contraception was a great gift, and clarified matters once and for all. Very often, matters are clarified and made more certain by putting them under the microscope, so to speak, and refining the various arguments. To introduce the natural-law argument was a legitimate development (or one might say "enhancement") of doctrine.
