Shortly after the Big C unexpectedly retired me, I found myself unemployed at a 40% loss of income and health insurance. DW's health insurance stood in the gap (whew!). However, I noted on one of my social security statements that "If you are disabled, you would receive" such and such an amount. Having had non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma twice and being then in treatment, the thought struck me that I might be disabled. So, I applied online. When you check some serious health issue as the reason for application, they expedite the process. Relapsed cancer in current therapy is apparently considered serious by Social Security. The upshot is that I was approved reasonably quickly and the SSD check perfectly made up the loss of pay and I qualified for Medicare two years later. Katy, if they reject your claim, there are law offices at the ready (usually across the street from the SS office!) who can argue and/or litigate your case for you. It is at least worth an inquiry. Thank you so much for the info po18guy.. its such a long wait...
