Today Friday 3rd February, is the day for throat blessing!
Today is the Feast of St. Blase- The patron saint against throat ailments. A good time to obtain the traditional Catholic blessing of one`s throat.
For centuries, it has been a tradition for Catholics to have their throats blessed on the Feast of St. Blaise. It is a long established practice as tradition tells us that St. Blaise, healed a boy who had a fishbone stuck in his throat.
The priest takes two unlit candles and crosses them. He places one on one side of the parishioner's neck and one on the other. And, the priest says this prayer:
"Through the intercession of Saint Blase, Bishop and Martyr, may God deliver you from sickness of the throat and from every other evil. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, + and of the Holy Ghost, Amen”
"Per intercessionem Sancti Blasii, episcopi et martyris, liberet te Deus a malo gutturis, et a quolibet alio malo. In nomine Patris, et Filii +, et Spiritus Sancti. Amen."

Blaise is confused in Jersey (the island near the UK) With a British saint, St Blasius. In some versions of the Arthurian mythos Merlin's teacher is called Blaise and given that is especially true in ' Le Morte d'Arthur' which was written by Mallory when St Blaise had a cult in the middle ages in the British Isles, it was definitely intended to evoke the saint by using that name. Blaise tries to warn Merlin against Nimue in this version.
T.H. White who reworks a lot of Arthurian mythos also makes reference to this by having Merlin remark he should find some time to see how his old teacher Blaise is getting on at one point. That also alllows me to do one of my usual attempts to sell T.H. White's 'Once and Future King' for people to read. I could spend hours doing that mind you and maybe I should open a thread detailing why Arthur is such a singular exemplar of a good ruler in that book.
