Interestingly, none of our monks took devotional names either.
It may be due to the fact that in Quebec almost every Catholic child is named after a saint of some kind. It's hard to say. In the congregation (Solesmes) all monks go by their baptismal names. I assume the same goes for oblates. But it's not consistent, I know an oblate from the UK that did take a devotional name. However some of the other orders and congregations in Quebec do take a devotional name. You often see it in the obits: "John Smith, in religion Francis..."
As for our prep and promise, we have an initiation rite to kick off our formation year. After one year of formation (can be shortened in exceptional circumstances, e.g. failing health), we make a solemn promise. We renew that promise annually at the oblates' retreat, or if we can't attend, privately on our own. Our promise actually, is verse 116 of Psalm 118(119). We also sign a charter promising stability, obedience and conversion, that we place on the altar with the offerings; oblate means in fact, an "offering" and it is ourselves we offer to God.

How've you been? It's both a post count and a year's count over there. I've been there forever but not enough posts. I just didn't care much after the first mass exodus. That was before you were even a member lol! I'm ok. Struggling a bit right now. Glad to have a new place to hang out and share encouragement in the faith. :-)

My fun pastime is gardening, just love growing things. Right now my project is fruit tress. I have peach, pear, cherry, fig, plum & Asian pear. Also growing grapes & can't wait to start the veggie garden. I enjoy getting my hands dirty in the soil. We have rich red clay soil on the island; great for anything that grows above ground. I find it relaxing & therapeutic. Great tension reliever. When I'm hold up in the house during the Winter months, oil painting is my hobby. Mainly into landscapes. I too enjoy gardening even when things don't grow as they should. I enjoy the whole process of designing a bed, figuring out what grows, and what the deer won't eat...So vegetables are never going to work for me, lol! Some of the soil in my yard is pretty good, but other parts have lots of rocks. But I enjoy the process. The daffodils are starting to come up, so it won't be long until spring now, and the deer won't touch them! 😃 I also am a painter, and I need to get back into that, but I use acrylics. I am also a painter of walls, furniture, fences, whatever needs it. Head handymam at my house and a couple of rentals we own does not leave a lot of time, but I am determined to get back to painting my own landscapes soon!
