Canon lawyers

Yes, canon lawyers, not to sound contentious, but what about them? The CF is signed not only by canon lawyers, but by many others, including, it's worth noting, several priests, who are (for the moment anyway) in good standing with their superiors. That's the thing with such documents as the CF, as well as the open letter to the bishops and the "Demos" letter apparently written by Cardinal Pell --- nobody can really refute them, or say what is "wrong" with them, the only objection that can be raised, is that Pope Francis has "discernment" that his critics supposedly do not have, or that his critics lack "docility", or that all of his novel teachings (and many of them are indeed novel) are the Holy Spirit (they wouldn't say "Ghost") working through him.

Apparently, we have two groups involved: those who are driven by the law and those by pronouncing who is and who isn't guided by the Holy Spirit.

Apparently, we have two groups involved: those who are driven by the law and those by pronouncing who is and who isn't guided by the Holy Spirit. As I said WRT the CF, the "open letter", and the "Demos" letter, nobody can really refute them, or point out where they fall into error, except to say, in so many words, "never mind all that, the Pope is guided by the Holy Spirit, so don't worry if something he says or does contradicts Catholic doctrine that went before it". That's getting whisker-close to how the Latter-day Saints view their "prophet, seer, and revelator", e.g., when he declared that black men could enter the "priesthood" after all (when they started getting pushback about it would be more like it, and let me be clear that I deplore the racism inherent in that just as much as any other decent person should), or when polygamy was to be eschewed (about the same time that this was going to be a roadblock to Utah becoming a state), or when, bizarrely, he said that they should no longer be called Mormons (even though the term was used unironically by LDS adherents from the earliest days of their sect). They move the goalposts according to which way the wind is blowing. Jehovah's Witnesses do the same regarding the prophecies connected with the year 1914, as that year gets smaller and smaller in the rearview mirror, so to speak.

I was thinking more of WWJD, and then what would Peter and Paul do.
