www.indcatholicnews.com/news/47672This is a nice tradition from what I've read, but that climb doesn't look easy and this archbishop appears to be 61 years old. Does he hike or work out a lot? Do bishops usually go? I also read some people climb barefoot?

Yes, some people do it barefoot Bear. My Aunt Mary, my mother's surviving half-sister, did it in her 60s but Mary is blessed with long life and still minds her own house and does her own shopping at nearly 90. The climb is not easy and some people abandon it. Here you can see a young lady who looks to be roughly half the age of the Archbishop do it: www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-SCtrGb_9IThe pain is meant to be a form of penance but it does result in people severely cutting feet or bruising them at times. Archbishop Martin is fairly fit for his age. He's also quite old school about being Catholic which has put him at odds with people. Especially about a decade back when he noted legislators and politicians in Ireland who supported abortion may as not well receive Communion as they excommunicated themselves.

Here's a video of a group of pilgrims doing it in 1964. Look a 1:10 where a young woman takes off her shoes for the 'joy' of the experience. You'll notice lots of people finding it hard to get up the slope and struggling. It's 764 meters of rocky ground to the top: www.youtube.com/watch?v=hwxGThx7IJQ

I doubt I could ever do this with a group, and if I did I would be sensible and wear my hiking boots.
