It is important to remember, even amidst the terrible suffering in Ukraine, Syria, and other countries, the ongoing tragedy that the Armenian people are experiencing.
The existence of this the oldest Christian nation in the world is currently under threat. Let us not forget that during the First World War the Ottomans committed genocide against the long-suffering Armenians, most of whom lived in the Middle Eastern Armenian diaspora at the time. Up to 1.5 million Armenians were killed in the genocide. Armenia's population is only 3 million now, and although approximately 7 million Armenians live in the diaspora in the Middle East, Europe, and North America, the 1.5 million murdered Armenians greatly impacted the growth of the worldwide Armenian population.
Since Armenia's independence from the USSR over 30 years ago, the state has faced a mortal threat from its aggressive neighbour, Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan's President has stated he will only be happy when Yerevan, Armenia's capital, falls under Azeri control. The independent ethnically Armenian state of Artsakh on what Azerbaijan claims is its territory was almost destroyed in 2020. Mass ethnic cleansing against the Armenian population is taking place there.
With Armenia's main allies Russia and Iran otherwise occupied, Armenia faces a dire threat. Due to the huge Armenian diaspora in the USA, the American government has been somewhat sympathetic to Armenia but given the reliance of European countries on Azerbaijan's oil, which is enriching the Azeri dictatorship and allowing it to wage continual war on Armenia, the situation is not good.
The ethnically Armenian state of Artsakh is in the midst of a massive humanitarian crisis caused by the government of Azerbaijan's refusal to open humanitarian corridors. The Azeris are also destroying the monasteries and churches of occupied Artsakh, which is historically one of the main centres of Armenian Christianity.
