This article written by Archpriest Vladislav Tsypin is one of the most horrific distortions of the Christian just war theory I have ever seen. It appeared on the Russian Orthodox website "pravoslavie.ru". The English version of the website, "orthochristian.com" has included both pro-war and neutral articles. The pravoslavie.ru website is run by Metropolitan Tikhon of Pskov. Article pasted below:
On the battlefields in Novorossia, the fate of the world is being decided - a new geopolitical configuration is being built for the coming decades, if these decades remain in reserve for humanity. Not sparing the blood of Little Russians and Galicians, the post-Christian West seeks to bring Russia to its knees. This is done in order to restore world dominance, which was acquired by the United States, unexpectedly for them, as a result of the self-dissolution of the USSR, and then gradually began to be lost for various reasons, in particular, due to the restoration of Russian statehood in most of the historical territory of our country. countries. The loss of short-term hegemony over the world is painful and prompts the US political class to resume the Cold War against Russia,
This world-historical drama has not only a geopolitical, but also an ideological aspect. The supreme goal of the new phase of the Cold War, which is being waged with particular ferocity, on the slippery verge of a hot war, is not directly announced, but it is visible from the context of official statements and private statements of influential politicians that preceded and accompanied the development of events.
After the defeat of the USSR in the Cold War, the Orthodox Church became the main enemy of the "free world"
From the totality of speeches by such an “oracle” of the West as the unforgettable Z. Brzezinski, whose pragmatism of an outstanding American politician and political scientist was fueled by a high degree of boiling of anti-Russian hysteria, which he inherited from his ancestors from the Commonwealth, the idea of fixe is built: after the defeat of the USSR in the Cold War, the main The Orthodox Church became the enemy of the “free world”, and with it other traditional religions that did not embark on the path of modernist liberalization, and at the same time all adherents of traditional moral values. The policy of the modern post-Christian West is aimed at suppressing those countries, peoples, public circles and selfless leaders of public opinion who are ready to resist the anthropological revolution started and carried out in the West, the slogans of which are gender diversity, designed to abolish the division of the human race into two sexes that exists from Adam and Eve, encourage same-sex marriage, promote sex change, from the tenderest age to old age, at least several times throughout life. Is it not about the modern West that it was said in the Apocalypse: “Babylon, the great city, has fallen, fallen, because she made all the nations drunk with the wine of the wrath of her fornication” (Rev. 14:8).
Behind the now hastily carried out satanic project, the intent of a radical reduction in the population of the Earth is guessed, so that in the future procreation will become the privilege of a select few. The blood of Little Russians was put at the service of this super-task by the rulers of Ukraine: the former, who did not fully realize what a destructive game for their people they had fallen into, and - quite consciously - the current ones, who can hardly be suspected of sincere Ukrainian madness. The momentary ruler of Ukraine with an artistic drive plays the role of a “broad independentist”, but he did not fall into madness, and therefore he perfectly understands to himself that this is his role, and TV journalists and bloggers from his propaganda servants, whose on-screen faces do not leave mocking smirks, cheerfully play along with the provincial actor "on the throne", portraying with the art of amateur club masters reckless Bendera. But simple-hearted Little Russians trust these clowns, and streams of human blood continue to flow on the battlefields.
The military campaign unfolding in the steppes of Novorossia has a religious dimension
The military campaign unfolding in the steppes of Novorossia has a religious dimension, and we, Orthodox Christians, those who are at the front and those who are in the rear, need to comprehend what is happening in the light of the Christian doctrine of war and peace, especially since in the minds of many among us there are prejudices on this score, up to the identification of the gospel teaching with the pacifist ideas of Leo Tolstoy, which, as is well known, were rejected by the Church in the most radical way.
It is known from the Holy History of the Old Testament that God's chosen people fought against the pagans, fulfilling the will of the Creator himself, and such wars were a feat of piety. Deuteronomy says:
“When you go out to war against your enemy, and you see more horses and chariots and more people than yours, do not be afraid of them, for the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, is with you. When you approach the battle, then let the priest come and speak to the people, and say to them: Hear, O Israel! today you are going into battle with your enemies, so that your heart does not fail, do not be afraid, do not be embarrassed and do not be afraid of them, for the Lord your God is coming with you to fight for you with your enemies and save you ”(Deut. 20, 1 -4).
At the same time, the Lord calls, whenever possible, to resolve disputed issues peacefully:
“When you approach a city to conquer it, offer it peace; if he agrees to make peace with you and opens the gate for you, then all the people who are found in him will pay tribute to you and serve you ”(Deut. 20, 10-11).
John the Baptist, who, completing the series of prophetic ministry, became the Baptist of the Lord Jesus Christ himself, and therefore, according to the teachings of the Church Fathers, stands on the verge of the Old and New Testaments, the Roman soldiers who came to him with the question “What should we do?” - said: "Do not offend anyone, do not slander, and be content with your salary" (Lk. 3.14), - by no means calling them to desertion or non-execution of military orders that their commanders give them. Moreover, our Lord Jesus Christ himself said: “There is no greater love than if a man lays down his life for his friends” (John 15:13). The Church has invariably applied this saying of the Savior to soldiers who sacrifice their lives for the good of their compatriots.
The Fathers of the Church urged to pray for soldiers. According to Saint John Chrysostom,
“It would be inconsistent with anything if, while others go on a campaign and put on weapons with the aim that we are safe, we ourselves do not even create for those who are in danger and bear the burden of military friendship. and prayers."
According to the canon of Athanasius the Great, compiled from his Epistle to the Monk Amun, killing in war is not a sin:
“It is not permissible to kill, but to kill enemies in battle is both lawful and worthy of praise. Such great honors are granted to the valiant in battle, and pillars are erected to them, proclaiming their excellent deeds.
The Russian hierarch Metropolitan Philaret of Moscow taught the flock: "Disdain the enemies of God, defeat the enemies of the Fatherland, love your enemies." Another Russian saint, Theophan the Recluse, put military service above other professions: “The military path is the best - pure, honest, selfless.” Arguing with the pacifist ideas of L. Tolstoy, he wrote:
“God often showed a visible blessing on warriors in both the Old and New Testaments. And we have how many princes glorified by the relics, which, however, fought. In the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra in the caves there are the relics of warriors. They fight out of love for their own, so that they are not subjected to captivity and violence by the enemy. What did the French do in Russia? And how was it not to fight with them?
The Church glorifies in the face of holy warriors: commanders, officers, soldiers
The Church glorifies in the face of holy warriors: generals, officers, soldiers, and among them the great martyrs George the Victorious, Demetrius of Thessalonica, Theodore Stratilates. In the host of Russian saints there are princes-commanders: Equal-to-the-Apostles Vladimir, Andrei Bogolyubsky, Mstislav the Brave, Mercury of Smolensk, Vsevolod-Dovmont of Pskov, Alexander Nevsky, Dimitry Donskoy. In our time, the commander of the imperial era, Admiral Theodore Ushakov, was canonized, who won all the naval battles in which he participated as a naval commander, and at the same time was a man of the most sincere piety and genuine Christian humility.
The Christian doctrine of war and peace is summarized in the Fundamentals of the Social Concept of the Russian Orthodox Church, where, in particular, it says:
“War accompanied the entire history of mankind after the fall and, according to the Gospel, will continue to accompany it: “When you hear about wars and rumors of war, do not be horrified: for this must be” (Mark 13:7). The Apocalypse testifies to this, telling about the last battle between the forces of good and evil at Mount Armageddon (cf. Rev. 16:16). Earthly wars are a reflection of the battle of heaven, being generated by pride and opposition to the will of God... The Church...does not forbid its children to participate in hostilities when it comes to protecting their neighbors and restoring trampled justice.... Orthodoxy at all times treated with the deepest respect the soldiers who, at the cost of their own lives, preserved the lives and safety of their neighbors.
In modern times, universally recognized norms of international military law have been developed, from which the “rules” invented by the Western community radically differ, according to which any means to protect the interests of the so-called “free world” are justified: atomic bombings, the use of napalm, the killing of millions of civilians, like this there was in Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, the destruction of states, which Yugoslavia and Libya have recently undergone.
Not the so-called latest "rules", but the norms of generally recognized international military law are set out in such acts as the "Geneva Convention of 1864 for the Amelioration of the Condition of the Wounded and Sick in the Armed Forces", the "St. less than 400 grams, Hague Conventions of 1899 and 1907, "Geneva Protocol of 1925 on the Prohibition of the Use in War of Asphyxiating, Poisonous or Other Gases, and of Bacteriological Methods of Warfare", Geneva Convention of 1929 Relating to the Treatment of Prisoners of War", "Declaration of the League of Nations" 1938 on the protection of the civilian population from aerial bombardment in the event of war”, the decisions of the International Military Tribunal in Nuremberg and the so-called. "Nuremberg Principles",
The norms of international military law contained in these documents are summarized in the Fundamentals of the Social Concept of the Russian Orthodox Church as follows:
“War should be declared for the sake of restoring justice; only legitimate authority has the right to declare war; the right to use force should not belong to individuals or groups of individuals, but to representatives of civil authorities established from above; war can only be declared after all peaceful means for negotiating with the opposing side and restoring the original situation have been exhausted; war should be declared only if there are well-founded hopes of achieving the goals set; the planned military losses and destruction must correspond to the situation and the goals of the war (principle of proportionality of means); in time of war it is necessary to ensure the protection of the civilian population from direct military action; war can only be justified by the desire to restore peace and order.”
The brilliant commander and bearer of true Christian wisdom, A. V. Suvorov, long before the creation of the corpus of norms of international military law, formulated the Christian principles of warfare in his "Science of Victory" written by him, setting them out concisely and surprisingly vividly, in a language equally accessible to an educated person and a simpleton:
“He who asks for mercy in battle - have mercy, who is the avenger - that robber, and God is not an assistant to robbers! They are the same people: it is a sin to kill in vain; do not offend the layman, he feeds and waters us; a soldier is not a robber. Comrade, defend your comrade!.. Work quickly, bravely, in Russian! Do not run into houses; the enemy asking for mercy, spare; do not kill the unarmed; do not fight with the women; do not touch minors. Die for the house of the Most Holy Theotokos...Which of us will be killed - the Kingdom of Heaven! Alive - glory, glory, glory!
The current tragic situation in relations between Russia and "independent Ukraine" has developed as a result of the relapse of Mazepism, which, unlike the times of Peter the Great, did not receive a proper rebuff from the central government. The first president of "Independent" cunning and deceit surpassed Mazepa himself, who was anathematized by the Orthodox Church, but the last leader of the USSR at a critical moment was unable to act like Tsar Peter the Great, although he was then in a much more difficult situation - Mazepa's treacherous rebellion was committed against the backdrop of long and exhausting war with Sweden, whose troops occupied the Hetmanate and reached Poltava.
The last leader of the USSR at a critical moment was not able to act like Tsar Peter the Great
From the very beginning of the existence of independent Ukraine, a separatist formation in the space of a single Russian world, a policy was pursued there aimed at suppressing Russianness in all its manifestations, despite the fact that two-thirds of the population of this failed state used the Russian language in everyday life, and not its Little Russian or Galician dialect, and about a third were of Great Russian origin. Russian schools, Russian-language newspapers and television programs were closed, in school textbooks the history of Russia, both pre-Petrine, and the imperial and Soviet era, was presented in the most black and completely improbable, caricature form. With the support of the authorities, a church schism was organized. Massive pressure, accompanied by the murders of priests and selfless laity,
Against this background, in 2014, a Nazi-style coup d'état was carried out - the so-called "Hidnost" revolution. The main slogan of the crowd raging on the Maidan was the cry "Muscovite to the Gilyak (to the gallows), Muscovite to knives." Crimea, the population of which, from the very beginning of the notorious “independence”, kept an unclouded consciousness of their belonging to the Russian world, was wrested from the hands of the “bloody pastor” and his minions and safely “returned to their native harbor”. The attempt of the inhabitants of Odessa to defend their primordial belonging to the Russian world ended on May 2, 2014, by bandits at the instigation of Kyiv, with a mass auto-da-fé - the death of dozens of peacefully protesting residents of Odessa. This atrocity reminded the townspeople of terror, which fell upon their fathers and grandfathers during the German-Romanian occupation of the city. Heroic resistance to the Nazi impostors who seized power in Kiev was provided by the Donbass, against which the authorities of the "Independence" threw the army, starting a war with the population, who managed in a short time to organize resistance to thugs and murderers of civilians, without distinction of gender and age. The “candy king”, who seized the helm of government from the “bloody pastor”, demanded that his army drive the children of Donbass into the basements, deprive them of the opportunity to attend school. This is how the war began to destroy our brothers, nicknamed - together with us - "Orcs", "Rashists", "Moksels", representatives of the "lower Finno-Ugric race, croaking in the middle of their swamps." The punishers who invaded the Donbass truly became like Cain,
A war has begun to destroy our brothers, nicknamed - together with us - "Orcs", "Rashists", "Moksels"
But “those who take the sword will perish by the sword” (Matt. 26:52) – in these words of the Savior the idea of a just war finds justification. In the end, Russia’s patience at the sight of the unheard-of suffering of civilians in the Donbass, who, moreover, at the beginning of 2022, were under the threat of a new strike of the Armed Forces of Ukraine carefully prepared by NATO instructors deep into the territory of the DPR and LPR, ran out. The liberation special operation carried out this year by the Russian Armed Forces is called upon to stop the recurrence of the Nazi repressive policy.
What is the enemy in confessional terms? Its core is made up of Nazis who profess racist Satanism. The instigators of the war with Russia are the militant Uniates of Galicia - traitors to Orthodoxy - and schismatics from the OCU, as well as the "Tse-Europeans" - idolaters of iridescent Western values.
The Fundamentals of the Social Concept of the Russian Orthodox Church contains the following statement:
“One of the clear signs by which one can judge the righteousness or injustice of the belligerents is the methods of warfare, as well as the attitude towards the enemy’s prisoners and civilians, especially children, women, and the elderly.”
So, cruel mockery of prisoners, their murders, massacres of civilians in the territories that were occupied by the Armed Forces of Ukraine after the withdrawal of Russian military contingents from there, arrests of school teachers in the Kharkiv region for continuing to perform their duty when Russian troops were there, the use of its civilian population as a human shield - the placement of firing points in apartment buildings, outrageous propaganda lies spouted not only from the corrupt mouths of the journalistic gang-brotherhood, but also from official mouthpieces, such as cries that the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant, which is under the control of Russian units, fire and bomb the Russian Armed Forces, probably in order to expose their soldiers and officers to lethal radiation, and finally,heart-rending obscene abuse against military leaders and soldiers who are carrying out the liberating mission of defenders of Orthodoxy and traditional moral values shared by adherents of different religions, against apologists for the idea of the unity of the Russian world, make up the physiognomy of the enemy, who en masse commits crimes, provided for by the Nuremberg Principles, formulated in the resolution of the UN General Assembly of November 21, 1947 ...formulated in the resolution of the UN General Assembly of November 21, 1947 ...formulated in the resolution of the UN General Assembly of November 21, 1947 ...
In March 1918, the holy Patriarch Tikhon issued a message regarding the conclusion of the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk - a kind of surrender act on the part of the Soviet government, however, it soon became invalid and disavowed due to the defeat of Germany, Austria-Hungary, Turkey and Bulgaria, which dictated the terms of this surrender. It authentically expresses the vision of the Russian Orthodox people on problems that are still relevant:
cannot remain indifferent at the sight of its death and decay ... We are called by our conscience to raise our voice in these terrible days and loudly declare before the whole world that the Church cannot bless the shameful world now concluded on behalf of Russia. This peace, forcibly signed on behalf of the Russian people, will not lead to fraternal cohabitation of peoples. There are no pledges of calm and reconciliation in it, the seeds of malice and misanthropy are sown in it. It contains the germs of new wars and evils for all mankind. Can the Russian people come to terms with their humiliation? Can he forget his brothers separated from him by blood and faith? forcibly signed on behalf of the Russian people, will not lead to fraternal cohabitation of peoples. There are no pledges of calm and reconciliation in it, the seeds of malice and misanthropy are sown in it. It contains the germs of new wars and evils for all mankind. There are no pledges of calm and reconciliation in it, the seeds of malice and misanthropy are sown in it. It contains the germs of new wars and evils for all mankind. Can the Russian people come to terms with their humiliation? Can he forget his brothers separated from him by blood and faith?
This epistle of St. Tikhon contains a prophetic warning, which was neglected by the creators of the collapse of our country, who voluntarily or unwittingly paved the way at the turn of the 1980s-1990s. path to fratricidal warfare and mass bloodshed.

This epistle of St. Tikhon contains a prophetic warning, which was neglected by the creators of the collapse of our country, who voluntarily or unwittingly paved the way at the turn of the 1980s-1990s. path to fratricidal warfare and mass bloodshed.
