i disagree with you bluekumul. There is nothing inherent in the Russian people that makes it "difficult to achieve democracy". Running a democracy is a skill that must be learned. In this case, ways of living in a tyranny and adopting to it must be unlearned. What do you think about Russian democrats like Navalny or Nemtsov? I am not sure their approach is helpful. Navalny in particular is no latter day Sakharov or Solzhenitsyn. Though he likes to present himself that way. He knew what he was getting himself in for coming back to Russia. And whoever said that Russia needed to order itself as a liberal democracy in the western sense? I think Russia can function differently. I do not want it to become a vassal of the most powerful Western states. It should remain independent. And I do not blame the Russians for disliking the West, given how the West has walked all over their great land over the past 32 years. The model of successful former dictatorships turned democracies like Germany is not necessarily applicable to Russia.
