People are upset, that’s for sure. It feels like the lines are being drawn. You’re either with the Pope or you’re against him.
In the past this usually lead to Catholics leaving the Church altogether because of their disagreements over Church teachings.
Now it feels like Catholics are saying, “I’m standing with the Church because of her teachings”. Which seems to put them at odds with a Pope who seems to contradict or at the very least, reinterpret what those teachings are.

Americans certainly do put ideology ahead of many other things. I would love to hear someone argue differently.
Not certain I would agree that people have left the Church because of any particular Pope. Maybe because the Church had a position with which they couldn't live, (like divorce and remarriage),or maybe because of some scandal within the Church, (sexual abuse, financial matters, or maybe just because they wanted something different. After all, protestant religions opted for something different than the Church.
There are people who are quick to try to make something scandalous out of what the Pope says, often taking it out of context, or not fully grasping the message which is being conveyed. I find it quite disturbing that some choose to think the worst of Him right off the bat, rather than give Him the benefit of the doubt while they try to fully explore the message Francis is trying to convey.
Many people today seem to have way, way to much time on their hands, and are constantly searching for gotcha moments for all sorts of people, whether they be political, religious, or something else. They would do well to focus on the plank rather than the spec, but hey, I guess sometimes they need to point out other people's faults in order to forget about their own. Just my take on much of this.

Galatians Chapter 1 (Douay-Rheims): 6 I wonder that you are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ, unto another gospel. 7 Which is not another, only there are some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach a gospel to you besides that which we have preached to you, let him be anathema 9 As we said before, so now I say again: If any one preach to you a gospel, besides that which you have received, let him be anathema. 10 For do I now persuade men, or God? Or do I seek to please men? If I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.

Most of us will see multiple Popes in our lifetime, but only one Church. Makes sense to have primary loyalty to the Church, not to some Pope who could die or resign any day.
