My view:
The Armenians, as during the First World War, became the forgotten of the world. In the words of Pope Benedict XV, uttered during the Armenian genocide, "The helpless Armenian people went to meet an almost total annihilation."
The West is and always has been very selective in choosing the suffering peoples who gain attention in the media. The terrible suffering of the Ukrainians is always in the news, and so it should be.
But when states propped up by the West cause massive suffering, there is little mention of it. Nobody remembers the Yemenis, against whom the Saudi government, with Western support and weapons, conducts genocide daily. And Azerbaijan is now a convenient source of oil and energy for Europe - so we might as well completely overlook the cultural genocide they carry out against Armenians, right?!
Not to mention the Baltic states of Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania. Ethnic Russians there are treated as second-class citizens despite being the majority in some regions of those nations.
And if the West wants to carve off part of one country like Serbia, create a new state within it, and declare it independent, that's fine. But woe betide any other nation that attempts to do the same.
The Armenians, once again, became the victims of political expediency. Once again, the conscience of the world is unaffected by their plight. Hitler, in justifying his genocide of the Jews, said "Who now remembers the annihilation of the Armenians?" Indeed, 25 years after 1.5 million Armenians were killed in the genocide - it was German aid workers in Ottoman Turkey who brought it to attention in the West - few thought about it. Because the Armenians and the tragedies they have suffered seem to be perpetually relegated to the footnotes of books about the very nations that caused them so much suffering.
