I'm familiar with Billie Holiday's music but didn't realize she was a Catholic till I looked her up for other reasons. Here's her grave:

No reason to be surprised about this.
And then there's Jim Nabors. True, his "marriage" to a man doesn't set a very good example, but he was Catholic nonetheless, a convert.

I was surprised that Andy Warhol remained an observant Catholic throughout his life, and faithfully attended the Divine Liturgy every Sunday. He was of Ruthenian heritage, so he belonged to the Ruthenian Greek Catholic Church. He was personally greeted by Pope John Paul II while on pilgrimage to Rome. Curiously, both Warhol and the Pope survived assassination attempts: Warhol in 1968, and JPII the year after they met.

Andy is famous for his Catholicism. Especially because it was so odds with the decadent bohemian world he was part of at points in his life.

A lesser-known celebrity, but still with a compelling life story: www.theparisreview.org/blog/2011/08/15/to-bricktop-on-her-belated-birthday/Please pardon the crude language at the beginning of the article, but, hey, it's The Paris Review. Not going to try and improve on that. (But I just noticed that the author says the family moved from Virginia to Chicago. No, dear, it's West Virginia. Two totally different places. A common mistake for those from outside the region.)

Josephine Baker who is mentioned in the article converted to Catholicism. She was also a member of the French Resistance and received a funeral with military honours when she died as a result.

Josephine Baker who is mentioned in the article converted to Catholicism. She was also a member of the French Resistance and received a funeral with military honours when she died as a result. She had a very compelling life story as well. Didn't mean to slight her. I've always thought of Audrey Hepburn as a kind of "honorary Catholic". Her fundamental human decency, as well as her grace and lack of pretense, makes her someone I wish we could claim. She played the role of Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany's with such winsomeness and modesty, that it totally flew over my head she was implied to be a high-class call girl. Along the same lines, I've always had the pet theory that the show That Girl with Marlo Thomas was inspired by Breakfast at Tiffany's --- pretty young struggling actress living in Manhattan and constantly getting into innocent misadventures.

Andy exemplifies in his own person that Christ didn't come only for saints but for all men and women and that righteousness can be found in the most unlikely of places.

Most people forget that, after Jesus gave the Two Great Commandments and was asked for a model for how they should behave, He provided His audience with a Samaritan, a heretic who they all despised. Substitute gay man or atheist to get a sense of the impact that His choice had for the audience of His day.

I think Andy was just trying to get through this life like the rest of us, and had a big wake-up call when he was nearly murdered. Sometimes I ask him and his mother Julia to pray for me. The church he grew up in will happily talk to visitors about him, as I discovered. It is thought that the iconostasis may have influenced his art.

Tragic life events tend to wake us up to the fact we are not permanently on this planet. Matters that seem important in our lives when we are young tend to fade away as we age.
