Two days ago, the criminal regime of Azerbaijan launched another treacherous attack on the Republic of Artsakh - an internationally unrecognised Armenian state in the ethnically Armenian region that because of history's mistakes came under the recognised sovereignty of Azerbaijan. In 2020, Azerbaijan took a great portion of Artsakh which had been held by Armenia for almost 30 years.
Again, the global community has allowed Azerbaijan another easy victory. In the last two days, almost 40 Armenian civilians have been killed and 25 soldiers of the Artsakh Defence Army have been killed. Many more were injured.
After a group of Russian peacekeepers were killed (almost certainly by accident - from which side it is not clear) the authorities of the Russian Federation proposed a ceasefire from 13:00 on the 20th of September. Both sides agreed to it.
Artsakh has been forced to agree to disband its army, much of its territory has been lost, and even more of the great centres of Armenian Christianity have fallen under Azeri control including the Amaras Monastery. Artsakh has agreed to enter into talks with Azerbaijan about its integration into Azerbaijan - in other words, its end as a state. Note that Azerbaijan is engaged in the cultural genocide of Armenian heritage in the territories it controls, which includes removing peculiar Armenian elements from ancient Armenian churches.
Masses of ethnic Armenians are now fleeing Artsakh to Armenia proper, as the state they have lived in for 30 years is basically being disbanded.
Artsakh is an ancient Armenian land. It is only because of the mistakes of history that it was not incorporated into Armenian proper after the fall of the USSR. If, as seems to be the case, the world will watch as it is incorporated into Azerbaijan, then much of Armenia's cultural heritage will be destroyed.
The fact is that what is now happening is likely going to be classified as a genocide. Yet the world looks on. The West is sympathetic to the Armenians but values cheap Azeri oil, so it turns a blind eye. Russia is dissatisfied with the more pro-Western turn of the Armenian government, so they turn a blind eye. Such that it gets to a point where, whilst much of the world is sympathetic to Armenians, nothing is done to help them.
It reminds me of the words of the peacemaking Pope Benedict XV, whose Armenian flock was decimated in the Armenian genocide: "the helpless Armenian people went to meet an almost total annihilation."
