Over 100 people were killed at an Assyrian Catholic wedding in Qaraqosh (Iraq) after a fire broke out. His Eminence Cardinal Louis Sako, Patriarch of Baghdad and head of the Chaldean Assyrian Catholic Church, described the fire as "a total and complete catastrophe". Cardinal Sako is visiting Qaraqosh to offer condolences to the families of those killed.
At the funeral ceremony, Cardinal Sako noted that in Iraq there are no building regulations or safety standards that would prevent such a thing from happening. He also expressed his gratitude to the Yazidis and Muslims, noting that the Muslims in Qaraqosh had cancelled their celebration of the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad in mourning.
The authorities of the Syriac Catholic Church, the Church to which many of the victims belonged, received Cardinal Sako with gratitude. Also, the Patriarch of Antioch, head of the Syriac Catholic Church, received a letter of condolence from the head of the Assyrian Church of the East Patriarch Mar Awa III. Patriarch Mar Awa III gave his condolences to the Catholic Assyrian authorities and led a prayer at the mass funeral service.

O God of spirits and of all flesh, Who hast trampled down death and overthrown the Devil, and given life to Thy world, do Thou, the same Lord, give rest to the souls of Thy departed servants in a place of brightness, a place of refreshment, a place of repose, where all sickness, sighing, and sorrow have fled away. Pardon every transgression which they have committed, whether by word or deed or thought. For Thou art a good God and lovest mankind; because there is no man who lives yet does not sin, for Thou only art without sin, Thy righteousness is to all eternity, and Thy word is truth.
For Thou are the Resurrection, the Life, and the Repose of Thy servants who have fallen asleep, O Christ our God, and unto Thee we ascribe glory, together with Thy Father, who is from everlasting, and Thine all-holy, good, and life-creating Spirit, now and ever unto ages of ages. Amen.
