The St George's Ribbon, as theguvnor will know, is a symbol in Russia and some other parts of the former USSR of the Soviet Victory in the Great Patriotic War. In 2016, a Russian politician Pavel Sergeyevich Dorokhin, Deputy of the Russian State Duma for the political party "Communist Party of the Russian Federation" (which, by the way, appears communist in name only these days and is better defined as embodying a vague mix of left-wing ultranationalism and Brezhnev-era nostalgia), met Pope Francis during the general audience in St Peter's Square. P. S. Dorokhin says he gave Pope Francis some Victory Day memorabilia, including a St George's Ribbon, which Pope Francis promptly pinned to his cassock when it was explained to him it is a sign of the Soviet people's victory over the fascist aggressors. Since 2017, the ribbon has been banned in Ukraine, where it is supposedly a sign of Russian imperialism. However, it is well-known that the Mayor of Odessa Gennady Leonidovich Trukhanov continued to wear it until the invasion of Ukraine began.

I wore it, will wear and have no shame about doing so. Anyone who doesn't like it can lump it as far as I am concerned.

I wore it, will wear and have no shame about doing so. Anyone who doesn't like it can lump it as far as I am concerned. A woman in Ukraine was arrested for wearing one recently.... I actually thought of wearing one on Victory Day this year but thought it probably not worth the hassle given I am neither Russian nor married to one. I do feel like Ukraine's attitude towards WW2 and its commemoration is very dangerous to be honest.
