Today I made my first visit to the New Zealand city of Palmerston North for the Solemn Holy Mass of consecration and installation of Fr John Adams as the new Bishop of Palmerston North. Bishop Adams, who regularly celebrates the Traditional Latin Mass, comes to his new ministry after a sede vacante period of four years. After four years of apostolic administration by the Archbishop of Wellington, the Church of the Diocese of Palmerston North has a new shepherd.
The Holy Mass of installation at the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit in Palmerston North, a city of about 100,000 people and the see city of the central North Island, was packed to overflowing such that hundreds of faithful had to watch the livestream on projectors nearby the cathedral. The Mass was very reverent, and the vestments the new bishop wore stood out as they were very beautiful and traditional.
The drive to Palmerston North was the longest I have ever made by myself but I think it was worth it. After the Mass, I talked with and had my photograph taken with 3 bishops: Archbishop Novatus Rugambwa (Apostolic Nuncio to New Zealand), Bishop Peter Cullinane (Bishop Emeritus of Palmerston North), and Bishop John Adams (the new Bishop of Palmerston North).
Bishop Cullinane was ordained priest in Genoa, Italy by Cardinal Giuseppe Siri in 1961 (Cardinal Siri was one of the greatest prelates of the 20th century I think). He served as Bishop of Palmerston North from 1980-2012. He studied at the seminary in Genoa when Cardinal Siri (1906-1989) was the Archbishop Genoa. To speak to somebody personally acquainted with the late Cardinal Siri was an honour in and of itself
I also talked to His Excellency Bishop John Adams, the new Bishop of Palmerston North. When I told His Excellency I was studying law, he told me that "We certainly need many good Catholic lawyers" and also reminded me of the need for more young men to enter the priesthood - he seemed very pleased when I told him I had recently been to a priesthood vocations discernment morning. Bishop Adams was most kind and gracious, and at the luncheon after Holy Mass he was the only bishop in an amaranth trimmed cassock and zuchetto. I attach below a couple of pictures I took of him [it wouldn't work because the files are too large].
I also saw Bishop Owen Dolan, the oldest bishop and priest in the country, who celebrated his 95th birthday today. He is very well for his age and processed in for Mass with the other bishops.
In addition, I saw Bishop Stephen Lowe of Auckland, Bishop Michael Gielen of Christchurch, Bishop Michael Dooley of Dunedin, and Bishop Emeritus Colin Campbell of Dunedin. Priests from the Auckland, Hamilton, Palmerston North, and Christchurch Dioceses were there.
