rorate-caeli.blogspot.com/2023/10/the-unique-form-of-roman-rite-in-wild.html#moreBack in the 1970s, when the water of my baptism (age 15) was hardly dry, I had the misfortune to assist at such a Mass, on a weekday, on vacation, with my father. This was in a diocese which, at the time, was rife with liturgical shenanigans, and this was just one case in point. It got so that I dreaded going to Mass when in a strange diocese, because to paraphrase Forrest Gump, you never knew what you were going to get. The diocese where I attended undergraduate school was also kind of hinky liturgically, though the downtown parish, which I preferred, was pretty solid. (I later learned that the pastor always celebrated the TLM sine populo, this in pre-indult days, a deep, dark secret only known to me because a well-connected layman in the parish told me.)

I was in the Palmerston North Diocese just under 2 weeks ago for the installation of their new very orthodox bishop. He has a mighty task ahead of him. The diocese is in a bad state. The priest mentioned here I may have come across before given he is actually a priest of my diocese, the Archdiocese of Wellington. This is not the worst liturgical abuse I have come across from a priest of my diocese. Still, it is shocking and very sad. Interestingly in the video you see the other priest whispering to him about needing the missal to which the main priest responds "I know it off by heart". Um, evidently he doesn't "know it off by heart" otherwise he wouldn't have made it all up as he went along. I feel bad for the religious sister whose funeral this was. She was almost 100 when she died in September and surely deserved better for her over 70 years as a religious sister and teacher at Catholic schools.

If nothing else, at least he did use valid words of consecration, "This is My Body", "This is the cup of My Blood". Thank God.
Not defending his actions in the least, just stating the fact.

The sister is hopefully in Heaven as befits a faithful servant of God. I will say some prayers for her soul just in case. In any event, she's not affected by some priest botching up her funeral Mass; God in his mercy would certainly provide her soul with the grace typically gained by a Catholic funeral anyway, as the actions of the priest were obviously beyond her control and her fellow Sisters did their best to provide a proper Catholic funeral for her. Rather, it's a wound on the body of Christ for the Catholics who have to live there and likely put up with other liturgical abuses from this priest and others of his ilk.
Good luck to the new Bishop in his task of righting the ship.

Ultimately, we have to blame the bishops. It is they who should reign in this abuse. It was more like an improvised Protestant service than a Catholic Mass. However, these days too many bishops don't seem to care.
I pray Rt Rev Mgr* John Lewis Adams may be strengthened by God is his work in the Diocese of Palmerston North.
*I don't know if NZ uses the English or Irish method of addressing bishops. The articles about Bishop Adams on his diocese's website and Wikipedia don't give his style of address.

As I watched it (bits and pieces), I thought, "you know, there are some really nice sentiments expressed here, there is nothing wrong with what he is saying". But no priest has the authority to make up a Eucharistic canon as he goes along. His words would have made a nice homily, but that's something different from creating a liturgy.

I have made arrangements, with my funeral director (I have pre-need), estate trustee, and attorney, to have a Traditional Latin Requiem Mass, at my parish church if possible, or at the funeral home chapel if it comes to that. It's all in writing, and it's very specific, a memorandum of understanding that will kick in immediately when the morticians come to collect my remains and take them to the funeral home. I have also arranged for thirty Traditional Latin Gregorian Masses, and directed my trustee to remit the stipend to the priest. He is a retired priest on the West Coast and has agreed to do so.
