Putin is looking for excuses to justify his disastrous invasion of Ukraine, and Zelensky just gave him one as a free gift.
The President of Ukraine Volodymyr Oleksandrovich Zelensky just gave Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin a special gift. What gift did he give to Putin? One that Putin has probably been dreaming of for years. Zelensky just decided to ban the largest religious organisation in Ukraine, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, which has 50 dioceses, 12,000 churches, and whose membership comprises 25% of the Ukrainian population.
Banning this Church is a gift to Putin. Why? Because it vindicates, in his own eyes and the eyes of many Russians and Orthodox Christians, the invasion of Ukraine. Putin can say, “Look, the Orthodox are being persecuted in Ukraine; this is why they need to be liberated!”
Look, Putin needs reasons to justify his ridiculous invasion of Ukraine. Now he can say – as Patriarch Kirill has been saying – “the Orthodox are being persecuted by an anti-religious government, we need to liberate them”.
Banning the Ukrainian Orthodox Church is idiotic and immoral. But quite aside from that, it is clear that banning it will have the opposite effect that Zelensky wants it to have – for it will only increase Putin and Russia’s resolve.
One of the few People’s Deputies of Ukraine who voted against the ban, Artem Dimitruk, said: “Who benefits from this ban? Firstly, this ban is beneficial to Putin, who will say: “I told you that Orthodox Christians are being persecuted in Ukraine, so I am defending them.” And with this ban we are only playing along with his sick ambitions. Many believers of our Church are fighting at the front. How will they take it? The UOC is not an enemy, the UOC is 6 million citizens of Ukraine who, in this terrible time of war, defend our state at the front and work in the rear. In conditions of war, we must unite, but, unfortunately, we see that many are working against Ukraine.”
What is more, a large part of the Ukrainian Army are members of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Does Zelensky really think they will accept the banning of their Church?
Honestly, if any world leader wants to take a lesson on how to best divide a nation during a war, then ask President Zelensky, who seems to be the world expert!
