On the 22nd of October 2023, in his homily at the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, the head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church His Beatitude Metropolitan Onufriy of Kyiv and All Ukraine spoke about the bill to ban the UOC being passed in the Ukrainian parliament. Speaking of the fact that the bill bans religious organisations "with centre in states carrying out armed aggression against Ukraine", he said:
"The center of management of our Ukrainian Orthodox Church is in Ukraine, in this holy city of Kyiv. Everyone is looking for a spiritual centre from where we are controlled. It exists, but it is in Heaven. There is the Founder and Head of our Church - our Lord Jesus Christ."
In stark contrast to the rhetoric of Ukrainian politicians, who threatened to hang or rape deputies that vote against the ban of the UOC, His Beatitude responded in the manner of a monk in an advanced state of spiritual development. I say that because it is easy to talk about love, but very difficult to do so when one is brutally persecuted. He said:
"No matter what they do to us, no matter what decisions they make, we will still love everyone equally. We will love God, we will love our Earth, our people, our government, our army. We will love all people and pray for them. Because our Church is the Church of love. It was founded by God, who is Love Himself."
