I would suggest you read the Pope's actual response, because it does not say what the article you linked said it does. It really is that simple. Just because X said so doesn't mean it is so.

Old Terry Pratchett quote, 'The lie is half-way around the world before the truth has even got its boots on.' This shows what happens when the media present headline and zinger and gotcha versions of events of some complexity. I recall UK papers longing to do stupid mug shots of Pope Benedict and stick Emperor Palpatine from Star Wars next to him. The implication was clear, the paper was suggesting we should view him as an evil emperor.

There are a couple of good blogs by priests that have gone into this in detail. Neither of them are Pope Francis' biggest fans. However, both have gone into some detail to explain why he is the legitimate Pope. They'd rather we had a different one but they clearly state Francis is the pope.
I think Pope Francis pushes it to the limit at times but doesn't go beyond that. I think the worst thing about him is his effective refusal to do what a pope should do, which is to confirm the teachings of the Church. Pope Francis gives Jesuitical answers. I'm sure he'd have made a first-class politician. They never answer a question put to them.

And however intelligent it may seem to make fine distinctions, to parse something and to slice it as thin as one of Ron Popeil's tomatoes, that is not the mental level on which the vast majority of people work, least of all those uneducated and living on the "peripheries" that are so dear to Francis. Unless you give them clear answers, they're not going to know what to believe. While Francis seems to have taken ordained women deacons and women priests off the table for now ( Deo gratias), there's still the impression given that, inter alia, divorced and invalidly remarried couples can now receive communion at will, the Church approves of same-sex couples (and very few such couples are celibate), Almighty God wants people to be of all different religions, the list goes on. There is a whole hierarchy of theological censures that can be imposed, even falling short of heresy, though sadly the Church has no way to impose them upon a Pope, so readers just have to use their common sense. I'll reproduce these below (you can click on them): From Ott, Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma (to paraphrase what Cardinal Arinze said about the Catechism, go pawn something for $65 and buy a copy): angeluspress.org/products/fundamentals-of-catholic-dogma-hard-cover
