Orthodox Metropolitan Yevlogiy of Sumy and Akhtyrka (northeastern Ukraine) said that the American government gave permission to the Ukrainian government to ban the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. He said:
"It was reported from the United States: The Ukrainian government has received permission from the United States to violate certain freedoms, including religious freedom. Washington sent a signal to Kyiv that it is ready to turn a blind eye to this. That is why the Rada decided to consider this draft of amendments out of turn and voted on it".
