Catholic Bishop Sarkis Davidian, an Iranian of Armenian descent, speaking on the 40th anniversary of the beginning of the Iranian Revolution of 1979:
"Forty years ago, the whole world was worried and watching news about the outcome of an event called the Iranian Revolution against the then government. We Iranian Armenians abroad were waiting to receive good news from Iran. As a result, by considering reasonable relations with the Iranian government and with the peaceful cooperation we had with Iranian citizens and with the leadership of Ayatollah Imam Khomeini, we achieved victory and now have a proper citizenship status.
Today, we announce that 40 years since the victory of the Islamic Revolution of Iran, this country has been able to stand up to all internal and external pressures, take steps towards a good future and definitely achieve final victory despite all the pressures of the enemies. Undoubtedly, the way and ideals of Imam Khomeini have been continued by his rightful successor, Ayatollah Khamenei, in the direction of the country's increasing prosperity and progress.
As the head of the Catholic Armenians of Iran, we align our voice with our citizens in this country and declare our loyalty to the national interests and the system, because Iran is our birthplace and by living and growing with our brothers in this country, we are their partners in the good times. Armenians declared their loyalty by sending Armenian troops to the battle fronts at a time when the enemies were planning to encroach on Iran's territory and seek to disrupt the country's security. Could we remain indifferent to these deadly events? Could we not open our doors to those who sought refuge from the air rocket attacks?
Taking into account the freedom of belief, legal and religious freedoms, the possibility of establishing associations, cultural, health, economic, and sports centres for all religious minorities in Iran, we find that this country has opened a special path for respecting monotheistic religions, and this has been observed practically.
May God bless the soul of Imam Khomeini, who recorded a new chapter in the history of Iran, provided comfort for religious minorities, and honoured them.
I congratulate the 40th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution of Iran to all members of this land, including the government, military, monotheistic religions and policy makers of the system, and I wish from the bottom of my heart for peace, tranquility and success in all future goals and plans of this country."
