Today marks 80 years since the liberation of the city of Kyiv from Nazi occupation forces, who committed terrible acts of genocide against Slavs and Jews, most notably at Babi Yar in the suburbs of Kyiv, where up to 150,000 Jews and Soviet prisoners of war were killed. In 1965, the Supreme Soviet of the USSR awarded the city of Kyiv the title of "Hero City", a title which the Ukrainian government again awarded in 2022. 120,000 Soviet and 16,000 German troops died during the Battle of Kyiv, which marked a decisive turn against the war machine of Nazi Germany. In 1981, General-Secretary of the CPSU L.I. Brezhnev opened the "Mother Ukraine" statue in the centre of Kyiv, which, by some was accounts was at the request of the authorities of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, deliberately built to be just slightly lower than the highest cross at the Kyiv-Pechersk Monastery. I truly believe that if the Ukrainian government stops repressing the Orthodox Church, then Kyiv will again become the centre of a great operation for the liberation of all of Ukraine from today's occupying forces. Eternal memory to the liberators and hail to the hero-city of Kyiv!
