This isn’t specifically Catholic news, but closely related to Catholicism as it concerns a title of Our Lady revered by Catholics and Orthodox.
Patriarch Kirill of Moscow announced he has found the lost original of the icon of Our Lady of Kazan, as reported by the Ukrainian webportal ‘Union of Orthodox Journalists’, with reference to the Moscow Patriarchate. The title ‘Our Lady of Kazan’ is the most important title of devotion to Our Lady in Russia. Our Lady of Kazan is named as ‘Holy Palladium and Protectress of All Russia’.
When the icon was desecrated and supposedly destroyed in 1904, a large portion of the devout Russian peasantry and clergy blamed the catastrophic defeat by Japan and the subsequent 1905 Revolution on its loss. Initially, its fate after the 1917 Revolution was unknown. Copies of the icon were processed around Leningrad in an attempt to save the city from the Germans in 1941.
In the 1950s an icon emerged and eventually was brought by the Blue Army of Our Lady of Fatima. From 1970 - 1993 it was enshrined for veneration at Fatima. In 1993, it was given to Pope John Paul II, who developed a deep devotion to it; eventually it was given to Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow on the Holy Father’s orders, although it is widely understood to be a copy and not the original.
This icon that Patriarch Kirill says he found is being held up as the “original” icon lost to centuries of war and revolution - the original icon of the Protectress and Patroness of Russia. He says it was found at the Patriarchal dacha at Peredelkino near Moscow, and that he is certain it is the original. Patriarch Kirill says a pious person saved it after the Revolution and brought it to a church, where it was later transferred to Peredelkino.
If this is true - thanks be to God! May Our Lady of Kazan particularly watch over Her people in this difficult time!
