At the Ascension Banchensky Monastery in Chernivtsi, Western Ukraine, a terrible thing happened on the 9th of November. At the monastery, in which the Ukrainian Orthodox Church cares for 500 orphans, 185 of them disabled, large numbers of armed soldiers and members of the secret police (SBU) arrived. The soldiers were carrying machine guns and when the monks tried to talk to the soldiers and SBU officials, the children inside the monastery were extremely frightened.
The monastery is ruled by Metropolitn Longin (Zhar) an ethnic Romanian who is the spiritual leader of the Romanian minority within the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. He is widely known for his criticism of the "modernism" of Patriarch Kirill, which is not an uncommon position in the UOC, which is considered deeply conservative, even moreso than the Russian Church.
Metropolitan Longin has adopted 500 orphans, who are cared for at the monastery. Ten of his adopted children are currently defending Ukraine at the front; four have already been made disabled due to injuries received at the front.
As soon as locals heard about what had happened, an "army" of babushkas and young Orthodox believers came to the monastery to defend it. Believers were able to get the intimidating soldiers to leave. The majority of parishioners of the UOC in this region are Romanians.
I remind that incidents comparable to this happen all over Ukraine practically every week. It is not an isolated incident. The Ukrainian government has turned into an anti-clerical police state, which persecutes Christians.
In a recorded video message, Metropolitan Longin said: "My children, 10 sons, are on the front line, and four are already disabled at home. We serve this state, and I don't know why we don't have the right to pray in our Church. I thank you very much, brothers and sisters, that today I did not call anyone, but you saw what happened in our monastery today... I thank you very much that you are with me, that you love us and this monastery."
