I've just gone home after a seminar at university. I didn't see the news about the attack in Ireland and riots till I reached home:
Most glorious Virgin Mary, Mother of God and our Mother, turn thine eyes in pity upon us, miserable sinners; we are sore afflicted by the many evils that surround us in this life, but especially do we feel our hearts break within us upon hearing the dreadful insults and blasphemies uttered against thee, O Virgin Immaculate. O how these impious sayings offend the infinite Majesty of God and of His only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ! How they provoke His indignation and give us cause to fear the terrible effects of His vengeance! Would that the sacrifice of our lives might avail to put an end to such outrages and blasphemies; were it so, how gladly we should make it, for we desire, O most holy Mother, to love thee and to honor thee with all our hearts, since this is the will of God. And just because we love thee, we will do all that is in our power to make thee honored and loved by all men. In the meantime do thou, our merciful Mother, the supreme comforter of the afflicted, accept this our act of reparation which we offer thee for ourselves and for all our families, as well as for all who impiously blaspheme thee, not knowing what they say. Do thou obtain for them from Almighty God the grace of conversion, and thus render more manifest and more glorious thy kindness, thy power and thy great mercy. May they join with us in proclaiming thee blessed among women, the Immaculate Virgin and most compassionate Mother of God. [Say three Hail Marys]

A prayer for civility in our communities.
God have mercy on your children here on earth and on all those bearing evil towards others. Redress their faults and mine by amending our hearts in Your infinite love until in heaven we can truly live in peace. Until then grant us through the unity of the blessed Trinity compassion to better understand each other so we may attempt to live together without conflict or division. Ubi caritas est vera, Deus ibi est. Amen.
Such a senseless act of violence against the innocent. Thoughts and prayers for those involved.

What's going on there? Why are they rioting? I've been out of the loop on this one.

What's going on there? Why are they rioting? I've been out of the loop on this one. It's related to some psycho Algerian immigrant stabbing children and a teacher outside a Catholic primary school in Dublin. Guvnor made another thread where we're talking about it. Our Lady of Knock, please intercede to bring peace to that area and healing for the victims.

Not what you associate Ireland with. It looks as if some right-wing group saw an opportunity to cause trouble and took it. Others simply saw the opportunity to go looting. The same people will almost certainly criticise the Irish Gardai and prosecution services if the culprit in the stabbing doesn't get convicted. The fact these people trampled all over the crime scene and made an investigation more difficult will never occur to them.
I ask Our Lady, St Patrick, St Columba and St Laurence O'Toole to intercede for us to bring about peace in Dublin. I pray also specifically for those injured or otherwise affected by the terrible stabbing of innocent people.

Some of is inspired by right-wing groups, and some of it is genuine frustration by locals who feel marginalized. Many of those who were sentenced today look to be from the bottom of Irish society, the unemployable, long-term unemployed, people living on benefits etc. For them, they see the arrival of immigrants as people who are getting free things. The mythical, 'they come here and get a free Council House and Car' sort of stuff you hear doing the rounds in the UK is just as popular in Ireland. There were claims all the nicking was being done by immigrants which is er, cobblers. A look at the list of the names of the accused appearing in court today will show a nice mix of mostly Irish names, one or two names that are probably Romanian and one or two names that are from the Middle-East.
