I just consider you weirdly obsessed with world politics. I figure you'll either grow out of it or go into it for a living.

Sounds more like a recipe for alt-right incel with a massive persecution complex, perhaps lone gunman. At best, that kooky uncle that everyone dreads at Thanksgiving and Christmas.

I despise the alt-right incel movement. I consider it utterly opposed to Christianity and I have no sympathy for the idea of Nicholas Fuentes and other representatives of those ideas. Also, suggesting I would be a "lone gunman" is something I find offensive. If you think I am capable of that sort of behaviour, then I am sorry to say you have misunderstood me Dominic.

i accept Dominic that in putting my views out for discussion I was opening myself up for criticism. I laughed at the suggestion that I am an alt-right incel, because I am very far from that. The statement about me turning into a "kooky uncle that everybody dreads" is also offensive but I suppose you have every right to say or think it. However suggesting I will become a shooter seems very extreme and unnecessarily offensive.

I just consider you weirdly obsessed with world politics. I figure you'll either grow out of it or go into it for a living. He's a young lad. It's kind of natural to develop slight obsessions at that age and try and slot things into a particular paradigm. I think the incel remark was uncalled for and uncharitable. He has a particular viewpoint on Russian politics and culture that is at odds with views that are more common elsewhere. He's approaching these issues very much from a very, very intellectual angle. I've lived in Russia and the ground level experience is somewhat more complicated and messy. My wife has read Luke's posts and agrees with some points and disagrees with others but noted reading them that the reality of the Soviet Union was far more complicated and that it was a huge mess of good and bad. She once illustrated that to me when I first knew her by noting that her grandfather who was an atheist and a senior army officer was happy enough to take her maternal great-grandmother to Church and to read the Bible to her as her sight declined. He also avoided critiquing religion in front of the old woman but if he talked about it with other people he could be very direct in his view that it was all bunkum. He enjoyed a good clash of wills and he soon sensed that I liked such arguments when he met me. Luke has a very high intellect but not everyone wants to do these sorts of back and forth debates in real life all the time. I have a touch of this in my own makeup as you know. People don't want to start debating the foreign policy of the Brezhnev area over the cornflakes and toast. I've learnt to knock this side of me on the head a bit but I've had a long time to do that.

Let's all remember not to make comments here that could even be interpreted as personal attacks, and focus on ideas instead.
That's all I'm going to say. I didn't know that our commentator had deleted himself. I'll be glad to reinstate him at his request.

I personally thought he had a lot to say that was of interest. I also would love to hear people stop using this incel/chad/alpha/beta/sigma rubbish. I tried to explain it to my father who is elderly one day who thought (quite rightly I think) that it was absurd nonsense.

From Britannica: www.britannica.com/topic/incel"Incel, member of an online subculture of primarily heterosexual men who identify as being unable to have romantic or sexual relationships. This self-described inability to form attachments is often expressed as grievance toward women. Incel subculture has been associated with misogyny, extremism, rape culture, and expressions and acts of violence. Incels are a subset of the “manosphere,” which includes other online communities animated by sexism and hostility toward women" So why does the online subculture use it as a term of abuse to mean any single young man? It is like calling all industrial workers Marxists, or all women feminists.

Because the Internet loves to make sweeping generalizations, such as that if a young man is single then it must be because he's a jerk in some way. It couldn't possibly be that he hasn't met the right person yet or that he has decided to focus on something other than relationships.

It is like calling all industrial workers Marxists, or all women feminists. I didn't know they did. I've always heard "incel" used to mean precisely that, and not as a generalization about all single young men. Long story short, incels set their sights too high, and seek to "punch above their weight". There are scads of women out there, might not be the first women a man would notice in a crowd, but are still worth knowing. And they need to recognize that they are not the first men a woman would notice in a crowd either. You can always make self-improvement a goal of yours. And, this must be said, many men have damaged their image of women by using pornography. They've seen impossibly beautiful women and can't think of settling for less.

I was single till my early 30s because I had other issues to be sorting out in my life and I never thought I'd get married at all. I've been in two long-term relationships with two very different women. If I was, God forbid, to end up widowed at this point I'd not sure I'd want to get married again or enter another relationship as maintaining such relationships is a very, very big investment. My father was widowed very early and never remarried because he never felt he would make the same connection with someone else the second time around. I am now the same age he was when he was widowed and understand what he meant.
