The local Pogues tribute band back home, Boys From the County Hell, did their annual Christmas show last night. I have seen them several times for St. Patrick's Day (including right after husband passed) and just regular bar shows, but never the Christmas show because I don't like this HoB concert venue and avoid going there if at all possible (the St. Pat's show is always in a tent at an Irish bar that I have used a number of times for family meals and wakes). But I felt I should go this year as it was first show since Shane passed. Venue was predictably horrible and the ticketing app assigned me parking in an almost completely deserted part of town/ empty garage 10 minutes away so it was only by the grace of God that I didn't get mugged on the way to/ from my car, but the show was good as usual, here's a clip - they always fill the joint to capacity and sell a ton of beer and whiskey. vimeo.com/897652784

I watched Midnight Mass with my father from Westminster Cathedral on livestream. He's getting a bit too fragile to go out often so I want to spend what time I can with him while still possible. The weirdest venue I've seen recently is Winter Wonderland where my wife was working as part of the team managing it till Friday. They were begging her to work over the weekend but she had made it plain that she wanted to spend time with family at Christmas and she has done 99 hours in the last seven days or so. I went there one day and you had two blokes selling crushed ice drinks for £8 a pop and the world's worst band doing Christmas songs. They were so bad I felt like walking onto the stage and pulling out the guitarist's cord from the amp. It was the world's biggest rip-off. Burgers were going for twenty quid (without fries) and I walked around for about twenty minutes. We used to have a much nicer Christmas market on the Thames but that's become a bit meh as well in recent years.

One year one of my oldest acquaintances who I knew when we were teen punks together in Cleveland and who later became a DC Reagan era punk and even later a well-known member of many different punk and doom metal bands, was somehow playing a Christmas event at some strange venue in DC (convention center?) With his latest punk band. It was targeted at 25-year-old hipsters and the whole place was done up as Christmas sweets wonderland with settings for group and selfie photos. Me and husband were in our late 40s but this sounded so asinine especially given that my friend and his band were also all in their late 40s, that hubs and I went. I wore a candystriped long old fashioned granny style flannel nightie and carried a teddy bear so I could fit in with the nutcracker sweet shop theme. It was fun but definitely one of the silliest shows I ever went to.
