Amusingly, there have been numerous biographies that have tried to establish that the Cardinal was a sublimated homosexual. However, this seems to be something people have claimed about numerous literary and clerical figures. It's essentially meaningless from a Catholic point of view anyway. Even if they were if they didn't act on those desires that would be the important thing from a Catholic point of view.

Cardinal Newman was disowned by his family for becoming Catholic, which hurt him a lot. I'm sure he dearly loved his friend. I am equally sure it was a chaste though deep love. Newman was too worried about his salvation to do things that carried such a high risk potential for not only going to hell but also wrecking whatever work he hoped to do on earth.
People are capable of loving very deeply without sex being involved. For many, sex is way the heck down the list of priorities.

You will find the sort of people who start this up are unable to understand male friendships from another era. I've seen people try and seriously suggest Frodo and Sam in the LOTR are gay. I imagine Professor Tolkien would roll his eyes at that sort of stuff.

I'm always reminded when people start seeing homosexual relationships everywhere of the infamous book by Dr Fredric Wertham which tried to argue Batman and Robin were gay. He was at least on somewhat more solid ground when he critiqued the BSDM elements in the Golden Age Catwoman. He made some bizarre leaps of logic though:

One could at least argue that Batman and Robin fit into the old Greco-Roman concept of adult man, often a warrior, in some relationship with younger teen boy who was sometimes his military assistant or trainee.

Yeah, Fredric Wertham tried to argue some points along these lines. To be honest the early Batman comics are simply stuff thought up in a hurry by Bob Kane, Bill Finger, Dick Sprang and others. Robin simply serves as a Point of View character for the kids reading. The problem is these sort of kid sidekicks have become massively dated and even in superhero comics they look odd nowadays. Robin is one of the last few characters of this kind. The current Robin is literally Bruce Wayne's son and is also half-Arab. Which has had some people going crackers. He's also exceedingly fond of animals but not good with people.

I'm leaving this thread intact, because it's kind of taken on a life of its own, but all other posts on the recent same-sex blessings controversy should go in the main thread. Thanks.
