ET VERBUM CARO FACTUM EST ET HABITAVIT IN NOBIS
And The Word was made flesh and dwelt among us.
Today. Monday 25th December 2023 is Christmas Day and a time of good will to all men, here are two beautiful Catholic traditional carols that have become staples of this time. The first is “Cantique de Noël” which all English speakers call “O Holy Night” The original French language version is slightly different from the version that English speakers are familiar with and loses some of its beauty in translation, but the English language version is also very beautiful in itself and I have chosen this version, perfectly sung by choristers at Kings college Cambridge, for your enjoyment.

The second still causes lighthearted disagreements between English and Portuguese Catholics as to the nationality of the composer. (The actual religion of the composer not being doubted by either!) The Portuguese claim King John IV of Portugal, whilst the English claim John Francis Wade who was exiled in France due to fidelity to his Catholic faith. It is of course known in English as “O Come All Ye Faithful” (Adeste Fidelis)
