As I try to wind down and find a few moments of distraction in these busy days following my mother's passing, I did treat myself to Mall Cop on Netflix (it's my son's subscription, I rarely watch it). Some thoughts: - I'd heard that it was a pretty awful movie --- but it wasn't. For what it is, it's really a very entertaining, lighthearted comedy. Not everything has to be epic cinema.
- Paul Blart was not nearly the dork you are led to believe he is. Too heavy, but not a bad-looking guy.
- He sees himself as quite the ladies' man, and a lot of times, perception goes a long way.
- It's a decent family movie with only minimal bad language, only one or two mild profanities.
- He's a good family man and takes care of his daughter as a single father, as well as his mother. Easy for me to relate to.
- If you wanted to read this into it, you could assume that he had an annulment, and was therefore free to pursue a relationship. His wife just married him to get a green card, and left him six days after they got married. (His religious background doesn't come up in the movie, but IRL, Kevin James is a faithful, apostolic Catholic and an TLM adherent on top of that.)
Well worth watching.
