www.usccb.org/news/2024/pope-says-he-was-used-2005-conclave-ratzinger-was-my-candidateI would never have thought that. Will wonders never cease? The resistance to having a "foreign" Pope no doubt came from the Italians, who, despite Bergoglio's citizenship in Argentina, saw him as "one of us". And they're right. I've always likened it to a son of English immigrants who settled in Toronto, being named Archbishop of Canterbury. Would he be English or would he be Canadian? He'd really be both. And no doubt Francis speaks fluent Italian and probably always has.

The current Archbishop of Canterbury believed for much of his life that he was the grandson of a German Jewish immigrant. It was only after paternity testing in 2016 that it became apparent his real father was Churchill's private secretary. Both his parents were alcoholics and he has spoken about the difficulties of that when growing up.
