The Word became flesh & made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory the glory of the one & only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace & truth.........John 1:14 //

We are so blessed to be temples of the whole Ghost. With the knowledge that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, I've always wondered why the Church took a more relaxed view on body modifications, tatoos, etc. On the one hand, there are certainly far bigger fish to fry, so I understand letting it go from a practical stand point. But if we "truly" view our bodies as temples, why tag the walls with graffiti/tattoos (so to speak)? I always thought it was ironic for Christians, in particular, to get tattoos of their favorite Bible passages, or a Christian with a huge Our Lady of Guadalupe on the back/chest. I see that and wonder what people are thinking lol.

I'm not sure that the Church has a relaxed attitude toward Catholics getting a tattoo. Most Devote Catholics don't, while those Catholics who do, like I did, did it before returning to the faith.
BTW, it's my understanding that the Church condemns body alteration like sex change surgery.

Yes the Church would definitely have to be against sex change surgery, just as it is with sterilization for men or women. With so many major issues at hand, teaching against tattoos publicly seems very small potatoes (and to be fair, it "is", in the grand scheme of things). And it's a fair point that many people get their tattoos before converting or reverting to the faith. But I know a number of fellow Catholics (practicing) and family members who have gotten tattoos of their favorite biblical passage/quotes, or their kids names, or some other sentimental thing. I just never wrapped my head around the thinking behind that.

The problem with tattoos for a person who lives a spiritual life, it's a form of ego that drives a person to get one.
Most spiritual teachings like that from St John of the Cross, teach to detach from ego driven desires.

The business to be in-- in 20 years will be excessive tattoo removal, you know sleeves and things like this, also sewing up gauges in ears. It will date a person because it's a fad
Military tattoos are fine.

katy777 How are military tattoos different than others? I think most people who have tattoos proscribe some kind of sentimental meaning or value to them.

The military tattoos are to show patriotism and are single tattoo's. These date back years. The full on tattoo sleeves and whatnot are a fashion statement fad which will not go on for years. It will date a person. People seem to cram as many as possible on Thier bodies.

Well speaking for myself who obtained a tattoo when I was in the Marines, it was ego driven. I remember coming home and showing my brothers and friends my tattoo, "see, I'm a Marine, ain't I great?" Years later Christ came into my life and I detached from such ego driven agendas.

I don't see any difference between a military tattoo, a biblical passage tattoo, or some sentimental thing that reminds someone of their late Grandmother. Almost all tattoos "mean something" to the person getting it. Someone could just as easily show patriotism by getting a tattoo of the American flag, or the "Don't tread on me" snake lol. I think Jimr makes a good point, that even military tatoos are ego-driven. That was definitely the feel I got from my friends who were tatting up after basic training.

I can't speak for others, but everyone whom I've known that has gotten tattoos, it was to show others what they believe. It's stroking the ego in my opinion, nothing more. BTW, people are just starting to see that the tattoos they got 25 years ago, are now starting to fade and look ugly. It happened to mine. The letters USMC are the only distinguishable part left. The bulldog in the DI's hat looks like a black spot on my arm.

I do have a tattoo but wear long sleeves all the time. It was/is for my enjoyment, not for general show. Also, both ears are pierced, but with small titanium “circular barbells.” They end at the bottom of the lobe, and were shaped to follow the curve of the lobe. They to not sway, nor stick out. Very conservative for now-a-days. Dominus vobiscum Here’s a thought: This body is a temporary home for the soul. It will die. It will be replaced with a glorified, perfect body in the end. What does a tattoo really matter anyway.
