I remember buying the YouCat (Youth Catechism) a few years ago as a present for someone who collects such things. Haven't read it too much myself, I'm afraid. Does anyone have experience with this book, and how useful is it for its stated purpose?

Yes, I use it in RCIA for the young students too old for CCD. Very easy read & user friendly for them.

I teach Confirmation prep. I have it and use it as a reference when I prepare lessons, but I do not use it in class.
I am not a big fan of it as a "teaching tool", but it is great for putting the concepts from regular Catechism into easier to understand language.
I am using a book called "The Catholic Faith Handbook for Youth" from St. Mary's Press. I LOVE THIS BOOK!! It's laid out nice, has real-life, practical advice on living your faith, and is very informative. I highly recommend it!

Ditto to the Handbook. Fabulous. They offer an equally great book on Scripture. I'll post links when I get home.
My pastor is a Scripture scholar and he loathes the you at, but of course wouldn't say why. Buy wouldn't let us purchase it for the teens. More later ...

Clare, very interested in why your Pastor feels the way he does. Any ideas? How do you feel about YouCat?

Plus, he thinks that since the goal is to actually get the young people to Mass regularly, Bibles gears at teens or children only confused. As far as the YouCat....he doesn't seem to like the folks who put it together. Why? No clue. I prefer the Handbook you referenced. Since we were told not to purchase the YouCAt, I'm not terribly familiar with it. I live to keep him at bay and not angry with me,

Like I said, I use it for reference, but I would never recommend it for a student. The Youth Bible we are using is the original NABRE translation, it just has lots of extra stuff to help the kids learn to use the Bible, as well as give, practical, real-life things for them to incorporate in their spirituality. I am normally not a fan of youth Bibles either, but the one we are using from St. Mary's Pree is awesome!!

Oh, I know the one you speak of! Our pastor was so impressed with the additional info and the maps, that he actually had me order some for the Hispanics, who have little catechesis and very little church history. You're referring to the CHildren's Bible from St Mary's right?
