Here's another question on the fringe. It seems like all the big questions of morality were settled centuries ago — or millennia — and maybe that's why it's interesting to look at little questions. I saw a news article: BBC News: Woman who found £20 note on floor convicted of theftIt raises a question I have previously pondered without a clear answer: How do you determine the morality of keeping money when you find it in a public place? I suppose it depends on the amount of money and the likelihood that you will be able to find the owner. Today I found a quarter ($0.25 coin) at the public library. It didn't seem practical to search for the owner, so I pocketed it and didn't give it a second thought... until now. The choice wasn't quite so clear when I found a $10 bill at McDonald's, on the floor in front of the counter where customers order and pay. I handed it over to the cashier and explained that they should retain it in case its owner came looking for it. She was impressed by my honesty (or my foolishness? See 1 Corinthians 3:18-19) and thanked me. I suggested that if the money went unclaimed by the end of the shift, the workers could keep it. Her reply impressed me: "I would never keep it. I'll put it in the donation box [for Ronald McDonald House Charities]." So what do you think? When are we morally obligated to turn in found money?

This is a very interesting question, and it makes me chuckle because a similar question is used by psychiatry residents to assess decision-making capacities (though that question is about a stamped envelope and not money.) I suppose the answer would be that you should make a reasonable attempt to restore it to its owner, or at least hand it over to a "lost & found" or the owner of the premises where it was found, in the hope of its rightful owner returning to claim it. If that is somehow impossible or impractical, using it for a worthy cause (almsgiving, in whatever form) would seem unobjectionable. Also, praying to St. Anthony might help.

All of those are good options. True story: When Joe was very young, he found a 5 pound note on the sidewalk. He gave it to the Sacristan, who said she'd give it to the priest. As a child, he STILL recalls sadly, that she made no attempt to tell him he could keep it. She eventually put it in the poor box. (He kept asking her whatever happened to it...she didn't take the hint, LOL) Amazing how the child in us sometimes returns when we find relatively big money. When I first read the title of this thread, I thought it was about finding a $50 bill in a coat pocket or something. I never ever seem to find money on the ground. ??

I found an envelope with a significant amount money in it at a festival. No identification, just a bunch of cash. I took it to the 'Lost & Found' where I was told, by a police officer, that they would not take it, as it would probably end up in someone else's hands anyway, so I should just keep it. I did leave my name and contact information, just in case someone came looking for it, but never got a call. I even put a "found" ad in the newspaper (they used to be free!) No one ever came forward, so it went to pay some bills and a big donation to my parish.

Only 11?! That is a typical response from police in my neighborhood! Over the weekend, we had about 20 in my neighborhood, my house was spared the crime scene tape, this time.

We actually use crime scene tape at the parish fro parish events. Or people drive over the food tables in the parking lot for picnics... yup. they do.

You should throw it in the poor box at church.
