I'm lucky, I guess. Our music director picks appropriate hymns for most of the Masses, including some good old ones that I learned in my youth.

Wow, that is wonderful! There is room for everything....but in many parishes it's all one way or all another way. And we all know, parishioners are not one size fits all. Some people just LOVE the more modern things. Others, long for the hymns in Latin even. Getting a Director that is familiar with the various genres and types of hymns is tricky. Too often parishes give up too quickly in their search and settle for those who can peck out a melody or carry a tune. God love them, they mean well. But don't we owe more to the Lord in the Mass? I'm not sure I know what the solution is. But somewhere, we've got to start growing our own experts.

Ha! You would love my parish then Clare! We sing all of the oldies I sang as a child and still remember! Ones that you mentioned, band more. So many that I once asked our pastor while I sat next to him at a school board meeting if the organist knew how to play anything written after 1847, lol! We do have the ocassional "new" ( Glory And Praise, blue book) songs, but because of the age of our parishioners, I think we are stuck in the 1800's.

Glory and Praise?. Oh. My. Goodness. Well, I don't mean we have the book, but if you know the book and when it's from, that's what songs I am talking about.

Unfortunately, YES. LOL That's where we first saw "I believe in the sun, even when it isn't shining." That and the musically unfortunate "Abba Father" which every parish sings like a dirge. Has 5 notes. Can't say as I blame them.
There are so many beautiful Bible passages that have been reduced to ...well...nevermind. I'll shut up.
