All I have is Shorter Christian Prayer which is not the same. I might have to settle for a Psalter instead. I have one of those.

Mine goes back to 1981 when I first began to pray in Community. I don't have the 4-volume, which may be the reason I have to flip so often. One thing about mine that disappoints me is the latest canonized saints are not included, even though the Church assigned a feast day for them. Anyone know if there is an updated breviary that includes them?

Clare you can get the four volume set at any Catholic Book Store. Also, Autom has them on sale: www.leafletonline.com

Anyone know if there is an updated breviary that includes them? There is the Supplement to the Liturgy of the Hours also published by Catholic Book Publishing Company; very thin paperback on a few dozen pages. What I do in such cases if there is no text in either the Breviary or the Supplement is to turn to the appropriate Common; that's what it's there for. Sometimes finding the right Common is a challenge (it's not always so obvious, especially if the saint is not a martyr), so for this reason, I always have on hand my current local Ordo to tell me. We probably will not see an updated Proper until the retranslation project is complete.

I especially miss Pope John Paul II, Andre Besette, St. Faustina and Padre Pio. I have the date marked in my breviary so that I can at least pray to them on their feast day.

Pope John Paul II would be Common of Pastors, and you can recite the closing prayer "For a Pope". St. Andre Besette, I forget, but I think he's from Common of Holy Men, Religious. St. Faustina would be Common of Holy Women, Religious (I don't think she's on the General Roman Calendar, though). St. Pio would be Common of Pastors.

One nice thing about Les Heures Grégoriennes, it has almost all the new saints. But alas, in Latin or French only, and only for the daytime hours, although the same collect is used at the Office of Readings. For memorials, the daytime hours are always of the day, the memorial isn't recognized (well, not textually, but the hymn melody changes for the Latin hymns).
In any case the Canadian Ordo will indicate which common to use, and in addition, will have the collect for the new saints that aren't in the LOTH as well. Very handy resource.
Otherwise as porthos says, use the Common.
Porthos, glad to see you grew some hair! Now only if I could manage the same...

Oralabora, I'm wondering if you ever visited St. Joseph's - the home of St. Andre Besette?

Yes many times! And I've prayed over his tomb. It's well worth the visit. A few years ago I worked mostly from home but one day a week I'd go into Montreal to visit the office, if for nothing else to see other human beings! St. Joseph's Oratory was on the way so I'd stop in for 7 am Mass. Given that it is over an hour from home, obviously I'd be up awfully early (I'd usually hit the road by 5:15 am), in order to beat the traffic. Usually I was lucky and it was early enough to make 7 am Mass, and most times even early enough that I could pray the Office of Readings in the crypt church (where early Mass was). Next door was the tomb. You can also visit the original chapel on the site, above which was St. André's cell. Another nice place to visit. Lastly they have a magnificent Stations of the Cross, outside in a beautiful hillside garden. I haven't been in over a year, I should drop in again some time, preferably in spring or summer when the garden is open. Sometimes though I'd hit heavy traffic and miss it. I always felt my day was incomplete when that happened.

Dear Illustrious Abbot, Friend and dare I say... visionary for giving us this Forum; perhaps this thread should be moved to Liturgy and Sacraments"? I think it would be a more appropriate home!

I always felt my day was incomplete when that happened. You are so blessed! I trust you have obtained a vial of the blessed oil that is used for the sick? I still have some that a friend gave me after her pilgrimage. I saw a movie about him on EWTN a few years ago, and was disheartened to learn that, like St. Pio, his order persecuted him. Some day, I hope I can visit the shrine, like you said, when the garden is open.
