Howdy everyone - long time no see We're currently in a three-Solemnity sequence. Yesterday evening, knowing that Solemnities of Our Lord outrank Solemnities of the Saints, I prayed second Vespers of The Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. Upon consulting the local Ordo after the fact, however, I discovered that I should have instead prayed first Vespers of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist. This evening, my intention was to pray second Vespers of the Solemnity, believing it trumps an Ordinary Time Sunday. Again the Ordo says "wrong," that I should pray first Vespers of the Ordinary Time Sunday, My question is simple: ...huh? It won't surprise me if the Ordo is wrong (wouldn't be the first time), but I suspect the problem may be my own flawed understanding.

Well, our local abbey did it differently than your ordo. On Friday, you did it right according to the abbey's ordo, which BTW is based mostly on the Solesmes ordo except for being French and taking into account local saints, feasts, etc. So the ordo said Friday evening was second Vespers of the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart, and Saturday evening was second Vespers of the Solemnity of Saint John the Baptist. I'm too lazy to check the table of precedence in the General Instructions, but I'm pretty sure the solemnity of a saint on the calendar trumps (lower-case "t"..., wouldn't want to spark some controversial discussions here now would we!) an "ordinary" Sunday (i.e. not during a privileged time like Advent or Lent; in which case the solemnity is moved).
Knowing how much of a stickler Solesmes is for liturgy, I would be inclined to go with Solesmes!

Thanks for the response, Ora, and sorry for taking so long to comment. Life has been nuts lately. Stop the ride, I want to get off I got my hands on a copy of the English Benedictine Congregation's Ordo, and it concurs with your abbey's Ordo as well, by extension, with that of Solesmnes. So I guess the provincial Ordo is wrong. Like I said, not the first time and not at all surprised. The table of precedence in my UK DO puts Solemnities of the Saints at #3 while Ordinary Sundays of the Year is #6. IIRC the French LOTH says the same thing, though I'm too lazy tired to get up and walk across the room to check

As a Third Order Franciscan, I pray the Roman version of the Liturgy of the Hours everyday. My favorite has always been the Psalms. I Love the Liturgy of the Hours
